A great article on the Corrado

Q: What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of having a Corrado G60 G lader supercharger?
I have a 1992 vw GTI with a corrado G60 engine swap, i get around 9 psi of boost everyday and the car runs awesome. I just wonder if G60’s have any sort of common problems to watch out for or if is durable. People with superchargers please help me. So is there very many advantages to the scroll charger design? Just wondering,

A: Advantages: The motor sitting beneath the supercharger is very reliable. Supercharging is a great way to extract more power from a motor without costing a huge hit in fuel economy. The car responds very well to modification as well.

Disadvantage: The supercharger itself is maintenance item on these cars, and needs to be regularly rebuilt every 20-30k miles. A lot of nuisance compared to a turbocharger that lasts from 100k miles to the life of the car. This is still an overall more reliable setup than the VR6 that was offered in later Corrados.

Q: Is £3750 a good price for a 50000mile mint condition VW Corrado G60 1992?
I am planning a trip tomorrow to view a mint condition 1992 VW Corrado G60 with 50000miles on the clock.
Does £3750 seem reasonable for this rare car?
Cheers.

A: has anyone driven a g60? they are great, the Corrado has slightly less power than the rallye but if the mileage and history is right then the price looks ok, check the injectors are standard (red tops give more go) and that the charger has a normal sized pulley as people often alter the gearing to increase bhp but this can shorten the chargers life and make the engine sound harsher (i think its worth it). Much more interesting than a vr6 and a definite cult classic

Q: What causes my VW Corrado G60 engine to knock under load?
When I take off in first gear up a hill the engine tends to knock a bit. Any ideas how I can cure this?
Thanks
it’s a mechanical knock

A: Maybe there’s a loose motor mount or suspension piece that is rattling.

Could be the engine itself – bad spark plug wires, bad spark plugs, too much boost, too little octane?

Q: I live in WA State. What would it take to swap an engine in a Corrado to make it a Diesel engine?
I was once told by a Mechanic that it wasn’t possible but yet there are numerous forums on how to do the swap and the wiring changes and harnesses etc etc etc. So I am assuming that it is a law or something of the sort making it difficult to do this swap. So what would I need to do to make this possible. Thanks
I live in Snohomish County.

A: what part of washington do you live in?

Q: What spark plugs work best for your Volkswagen Corrado?
I just bought a 1991 Volkswagen Corrado and was wondering what spark plugs work best.

A: Attached link hope this helps

Q: Should I buy a VW Corrado VR6 or a Nissan 300zx?
Looking to upgrade from my BMW 318is. I have previously owned a 16v Corrado and enjoyed it, yet have always had a soft spot for a 300zx.

Slightly concerned about some reliability issues regarding the Nissan.

Any opinions, suggestions etc will be gladly taken on board!

A: I would take a 318is over a Corrado VR6 and a Nissan 300ZX. If you’re looking to upgrade your 318is, let me offer a few suggestions…

If it’s a Japanese RWD sporty car you’re looking for, how about a 350Z or a G35? I know those are both a bit pricey, but they’re great bargains for the performance.

If you want something light and well-balanced like your 318is, I’d snag a Miata. They’re cheap, fun, and reliable. It’s more of a dedicated sports car than your 3-series, but you won’t lose much in everyday comfort or fuel economy.

I also have a soft spot for Volkswagens. I have owned several diesel VWs, and they’re not much slower than your I4 3-series. If I were you, I would take a look at a 4th-generation (‘99-’05) Golf/Jetta TDI. They have great handling, and they’re comically cheap to operate. 50 MPG!

One more suggestion–how about a 6-cylinder 3-series? Perhaps a 325i or 328i from the late 1990s? This will give you most of the benefits of your current 3-series, plus more spirited performance.

Good luck! I hope you’ll let us know if you buy anything.

Q: I have a 1990 Volkswagon Corrado G60 and the clutch pedal is completely loose what can it be?
the clutch pedal is loose it just stays in what is the problem?

A: Clutch Master cylinder

Clutch Slave cylinder

Q: Is a 1990 VW Corrado G60 Supercharged car reliable?
I’m planning to buy one. I want to know if anybody out there knows about these vehicles. Please list some pros and cons too. Thanks.

A: The superchargers on those is the biggest issue. Has it been rebuilt? The engine on them is very hearty and will last a very long time with proper maintenance. Electrical gremlins include the spoiler and the automatic seat belt system.

Q: Does the rear seats of the Volkswagen Corrado comfortably accomodate 2 highschool boys?
I think this car looks tight!!! I have 190 lb and less than 6 ft bros. It’s only going to be for two and a half years. I love VW and I really don’t know much of this car. It’s probably the only car I don’t have the specs memorized!

please help!!!!!!!

A: No.

The back seats of the Corrado are bucket-seat like, and there is really very little legroom, unless you’re 5′2″ or something. It’s OK for (very) short trips, but that’s about it.

The Corrado is really a 2+2, good only for small kids in the back. I had both the G60 and the SLC, and the back seat is that same for both models.

Q: 300zx vs vw corrado what is a cheaper build?
I am thinking of doing a build and i love the corrado but i also like the 300zx twin turbo. what i am asking is cost wise for hp and ftlbs what is the better build?

A: You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here – carinsurance.yoll.net

Q: My volkswagen Corrado having electrical problems?
I recently bought a Vw Corrado g60 and something is draining my brand new battery and i took the alternator to autozone it pass as like brand new. any suggestions and it has no stereo in it but the stereo wires are touching copper to copper could that be it?

A: I am having the same problem with my 1991 G60. I had installed an aftermarket radio and connected it directly to the battery. Even though the radio was off, I measured quite a current draw at the battery with the radio connected. I have since disconnected the radio and charged the battery…we’ll see if that was the problem. If that isn’t your problem, then check your battery and ground connections, they must be shiny clean or your battery won’t get a good charge. Also, you can connect an ammeter between your battery negative post and the ground strap for the battery. Then, measure the current draw and pull fruses from the fuse panel until you see a current drop, then you’ll know what circuit is drawing too much current. Hope this helps, good luck.

Q: Is a 94 Volkswagen Corrado a good first car?
My friend’s Dad said he would sell me his Carrado that donst run, but only needs about 2-3 thousand dollars of work on the engine for 750, its a manual. What do you think about the car/ how good is it for a first car.

A: Personally I would not recommend a VW Corrado unless you are mechanically inclined. The maintenance and repairs can be expensive compared to more common brands ie:Chev, Ford, Honda, Toyota. However, it is supposed to be an excellent performing car – powerful and fun to drive. If there is nothing else wrong with the car (which you prob wouldn’t know until the engine is repaired) then it might be a good deal, but VW is not known for their reliability or cheap maintenance. It is also quite rare so availability of parts would also be an issue.

Q: why does my 1992 vw corrado idle so low?
The rpm runs real low, in an up and down motion. it does this when i first start the car and while coming to a stop. if i let it keep idling the engine eventually turns off. What’s the problem?

A: Could be a lot of things but an idle air control valve/motor might be the problem or a vacuum leak.

Q: Any ideas in sporadic rough running VR6 Corrado?
`92 Corrado VR6. Stock except K&N cone filter. Runs fine, then rough, then fine. Changed fuel filter, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor.Did I miss some vacuum line when I removed the airbox to install K&N filter, or do I have some bad gas?( I added isopropyl to fuel tank to dissipate water just in case.) Or is there a fuel injection problem that would only cause rough running every so often? Any sensor or part I can check? Thanks for any suggestions.

A: VR6 coil packs have a limited lifespan. Check for hairline cracks in the black gelcoat, often in between plug terminals.
If I had to bet, I would put my money on this being the problem.

Remember- 99% of “fuel related” problems end up being ignition in the end.

Q: Anybody ever swap the fuel system from a VR-6 corrado into an A2 jetta?
I am trying to swap over my corrado into an A2 jetta. Anybody have any experience with this and how do I get the fuel system over? Thanks

A: I found a link doing the opposite, Vr6 into an A2. But it might be interesting reading.

I don’t think you will have too much trouble with the fuel system.
I would leave the wiring harness, control modules, etc., with the engine.
The only thing you would want to leave behind is the fuel pump, and that should be no problem because the pressure is controlled by the rail regulator.
