Land Rover

A great article on the Land Rover

Q: land rover?
to all the people who have knowlege of cars. i am going to buy a 2000 land rover discovery with 50,000 miles for $14,000 are does good realiable car, and who is range rover made by? its is a american or japaness?

A: not worth it.

Land Rovers were once the King Of The Hill.

now they are just overpriced and plastic.

back in the days of Wild Kingdom sponsored by Mutual of Omaha, land rovers were as tough as tanks but that was 1960’s?

those days are long gone.

if you want a 4 wheel drive get a Subaru

Q: Land Rover?
So, I’m planning on buying this car. It’s a ‘95 land rover Discovery V8I. Does anybody know anything about them? Like how safe are they? How often do they mess up and how much are repairs? What’s the gas mialage? Or anything else like that.

A: The Discovery II’s (1999-2004) are a much, much better car. I’m inclined to say the Discovery Series I is fairly unreliable and rather expensive to maintain. They have the older-style fuel injection that Rover switched out for Bosh in 1999. The 95 is barely OBDII, and bound to have been abused.

The Discovery II’s made improvements to the body, engine and suspension. They have more creature comforts and are in general more reliable. If you must have a newer Land Rover, a Disco II is the way to go. But expect to go through the usual: Headgaskets at 60-80,000 miles, major services every 30,000 miles, ABS valve block issues etc.

And either way, I would get a pre-purchase inspection done by a shop that knows Discoveries. It is an extremely good idea. The car you buy could bite you hard in the wallet if you don’t. A PPI also gives you a starting point for bargaining.

Q: What kind of anti-freeze does a land rover discovery use?
I have a 2000 Land Rover Discovery. I want to know if it uses the 50/50 anti-freeze or the 100% anti-freeze?

A: use half anti freeze, half water. get peak or prestone coolant.

Q: How does Land Rover’s exhaust system perform when the car is submerged?
Land Rover can be partially submerged in water; how (if at all?) does the exhaust system differ from other exhaust engineering to prevent damage?

A: It isn’t a big deal.

All you have to do is keep your revs high enough to help keep water out. In most cases, water fording will require higher revs anyway, and you will generally be in a lower gear for instant power if needed, so it isn’t normally a problem.

Even if this doesn’t work out properly, and you do get water in the exhaust system, the vehicle can still run. I have managed to start my Rover with a flooded exhaust before, while it was still sitting in the water. They just don’t mind it all that much, in the end. It isn’t really a problem.

It is the intake you should be worried about, and electronics. Neither are really much of an issue on Rovers if you are fording the water properly.

Military vehicles have the raised exhaust systems sometimes for many reasons. It isn’t required for fording, but the larger the exhaust pipe, the less pressure builds up to keep out water. Military vehicles are diesel, and tend to have very large low pressure exhaust systems. As well, the vehicles just aren’t sealed up all that well, they don’t provide good throttle modulation, and they have to be soldier-proofed.

In such cases, it is generally best just to raise the exhaust outlet to avoid any potential issues, even if they are not likely.

Q: What fuel type does the 1997 land rover discovery use?
Iwant to get a 1997 land rover discovery (automatic, with a V8 engine) and i want to know hat type of fuel does it use. I am hoping that it can use regular and if it uses premium can it use regular fuel.

A: A car engine is designed to operate on a certain octane. High octane fuel burns slower which allows for high compression. Not putting the right octane fuel in a car will negatively effect performance. If a car is designed for 87 octane putting 93 octane will actually hurt performance.
You can get away with running lower than recommended octane in a car as long as you don’t hear the engine “pinging” which is fuel burning too fast in the cylinder. If your going to be traveling in the mountains or towing a boat you should put the correct octane in the car. If your just driving in the city you can get away with lower octane.
I don’t know what type of fuel a 97′ land rover uses but your better off always putting the right octane fuel in a car, not higher not lower.

Q: How to save up money to buy a 2000 land rover or range rover?
Okay so this is going to sound really crazy(and stupid).
-i’m only 14, (going on 15in a week)
and i want to save up for a 2000 range/land rover for when i’m 16.
Is there any possible way,
without working full time, wasting away the summer?

A: Good choice in a first vehicle. Don’t let ANYONE tell you different. If they try to, they do not know what they are talking about. A Range Rover, if owned in the company of other Rover enthusiasts, will set you on a wonderful path in life full of great people and great fun and adventure.

Fortunately, you don’t need to save up much to get what you want. Resale values on those are pretty low, and that works great for purchasing.

That particular model is called the P38. They have an undeserved bad reputation. Land Rover bit off more than they could chew with the air suspension, and it tends to fail eventually. Simple to fix, though.

One set of coil springs, and you never have another problem. Great excuse for a lift… :D Just buy one, and don’t worry. If it ever gives you trouble, grab a set of coils. They are widely available.

As for how to save, break off a piece of whatever money you get your hands on and put it away. Whatever you can afford to go without, break it off and put it away. While you are at it, offer to do as many small jobs for people as you can, you get more per hour doing that than anything. Mowing lawns adds up like crazy at your age, and you only need a cheap used mower.

You aren’t crazy at all, you know what you want, and you are trying to come up with a way to get it. Keep this attitude in life, and nothing will be beyond your grasp. Check out online Rover clubs for more advice and help. Discoweb is a great place to meet great people if you are willing to learn.

You may have to work part time somewhere to help generate the money along with the small jobs and other things, but it will be well worth it. Trust me. That Range Rover will shortly become the most wonderful thing you could ever own. And owning one feels just as good as imagining it. Every day I get into a Rover, I smile as wide as I did when I first saw one.

You want to try and come up with several thousand dollars. 5 will get you into a decent one, 6 will start you off with lower miles. Ebay isn’t the place to shop, enthusiast forums is where you need to look. Better Rovers with good owners and pretty public histories are sold cheaper there. Like I said, check out discoweb.

You are on the right track, man. You can have your Range Rover. Go ahead and consider it yours, and do what it takes to get it. You have the time to pull it off, and so far as I can tell, you have the attitude to do it as well.

If you have any Rover specific questions, I’d be glad to answer them, just contact me here. As far as I can tell, I’m the only Rover guy that hangs around answering these questions anymore. :)

Q: How much should we expect to spend on a 2nd hand land Rover to drive us around Europe for this summer?
Me and a mate need to purchase a land rover to travel around Europe this summer. We’re looking for a defender (year about 1990) that isn’t going to break
down before we get to Calais. We’re looking to not to spend not much more than £1,500, Is this going to be possible? We’re looking on auto trader and e-bay
as we speak. But any other suggestions would be welcome.

A: Forget about getting a Landrover, they will let you down, I have worked on them for 30 years, and if it’s getting on in age, there will be something about to break.
I often go to the south of France, and have been driving a Shogun, the first of which I had as a part exchange and allowed £300 for it, the one I have now has been down 4 times now and each time towing a three and a half tonne trailer full, plus wife, dog etc. I bought it off ebay for £600 and fitted a s/hand turbo for thirty quid. Going again a soon as the new dogs passport is sorted!
Whatever you get Fit a new cambelt.

Q: What are the latest CV layouts of the Peugeot and Land Rover in the UK?
Does anyone know what are the latest CV layouts of the Peugeot and Land Rover ( Range Rover) in the UK? I have been asked to search for this info by someone and I know nothing about cars. Where can I find this information or online UK dealerships? Cheers!

A: Over here a CV is a constant velocity joint and is the thingy that enables the engine to be kept still while the wheels and other parts move round it. They are usually made in a cruciform and contained in a rubber boot. These are usually bought as a part and fitted directly onto the drive shafts, so no plan is required.

Q: Land Rover Defender 3door can any one tell me about its good or bad?
Land Rover Defender i like 3 door any one can tell me it good and bad about it,s driver durable or not.

A: First it’s what size Defender 90 110 130. I take it by 3 door you mean the hard top. Have you ever driven a Defender before? They do not drive like cars it is in basic terms a work vehicle. Hard rough ride, not much room inside, noisy, drafty and the worst heater in history. If you can cope with this you will love it if you want comfort or drive only on the road don’t bother. If it’s and old defender be prepared to be laying under it on at least a monthly basis. I love land rovers and have 2 but take them for what they are work vehicles and good 4×4s not cars.

Q: will running out of gas in a land rover cause it to need a new fuel pump?
a friend borrowed a friends land rover and she ran out of gas. after putting gas in it the thing wouldnt start. now she is being blamed for it needing a new fuel pump because of running out of gas once. its about a 2000 land rover.

A: omg yes dont do it. Its gonna cost like 800 i did this to my 2000 oldsmobile it sucked its like the car locked on me. Good luck and remember dont let 30 dollars in gas turn into 800 dollars on a new pump
