A great article on VW

Q: VW radio – is it possible to retrieve the code from the radio before disconnecting battery?
I have a friend who needs to replace the battery in a VW New Beetle. When the battery is reconnected, the radio will probably need its security code re-input. Is it possible to get the code from the radio now, while it is still active before the battery is disconnected?

A: Shortly put, no. I drive a VW Jetta with the Bose system. YOu absolutley need to get that code, or go to the dealership.
(If you enter the code wrong three times in a row, you can’t retry for six hours… be cautious)

Q: Why is VW dealer charging over $1300 just to replace coolant reservoir and brake pads?
My bf took his 2002(?) VW Golf to dealer for 90,000 check-up, and they are charging $1375 because they say he has a cracked coolant reservoir and needs new brake pads. Also doing oil change and other fluids replacement. This seems like highway robbery to me.

A: Yes it is. Dealerships prey on people who aren’t knowledgeble. Plus dealerships charge twice what a repair shop would. I would tell the dealership NOT to do ANY work on the car and I would call around to repair shops to get qoutes and see how soon they could get the car in for repair. You could save several hundred dollars by doing this. I would get the woek done ASAP but you can still drive the car for a week or so.

Q: How much does it cost to paint a vw bug?
I am looking into buy a 1967 vw beetle. Before I do I want to know what it would cost to paint an older one or just put the money I would put into the paint on a nicer, already painted one. Does any one know how much it cost to paint a vw beetle (remember on vw bugs you have to paint the interior as well) by a professional.

A: First off the 1967 bug was a good one. If you have found a nice bug but simply lacks the paint, then consider the cost of the paint as cheap insurance as the value of your car will substantially increase with a new paint job and continue to increase as the years pass.

It does not work that way for all beetles. For example a 73 or 74 beetle will almost always have body rot on the rear end because of design flaws and the dashboard was less appealing.

So.. back to your question..

Paint jobs are a function of the skill of the person doing it. There are people that can use spray cans and give you a great job and others with power units and drying booths that can never get it done right. So look at what your painter as done as a part of deciding who you want to paint it.

Also, the area where you live reflects the cost of the paint job. Out here on the west coast a $1000 paint job may be ‘ok’ (not great but ok) while in the midwest that same job may only cost $700 or so because the cost of doing business is much less.

So.. given that as a starting point, I had my bug painted last year for a ‘little better then ok’. That means I personally stripped all of the chrome off (an easy thing to do on bugs) rather then have it masked, and removed the inside door panels (so the color change would include the doors) and drove it down to the painter. He did a job with two plus coats of color and three coats of clear epoxy coat, for around $1200. Looks great and gets comments all the time.

.. which ever way you go, you WILL enjoy your bug so congrats…

Q: What is the difference between a VW Golf and a VW Rabbit?
Is the Rabbit just a newer version of the old Golf? I had a 2004 Golf and really loved it. Until someone stole it. Now I drive a Pick-up and I’m thinking of going back to VW.

A: The Golf was just rebranded as the Rabbit for the US Market in 2006. So besides in name nothing.

Q: Exhaust Emmision Light on VW Polo – is it safe to continue driving till the next service in 2 weeks time?
This morning the exhaust emmission light came on in my ‘53′ plate VW Polo. Is it OK to continue driving it until the next service (Its already booked a service and MOT in 2 weeks time)

I’m especially concerned as I was planning to drive to a Gig 50miles away tomorrow night. Would it be worthwhile to only use it on local journeys untill the garage can have a look at it.

A: This is a common fault on polo’s, it could just be that the lambda probe that is in the exhaust has failed, my service history shows my car has had one at about the same age yours is now, like the other guy said some dodgy fuel can cause this but there are other theories, sometimes if you take the car on a really short journey and switch the engine off it can trigger this fault due to a build up of gas in the exhaust system.
It only takes a small change in exhaust emmissions to trigger this fault, I’d say your ok to wait till the service, you may find it will go off it’s self like mine did

Q: VW Jetta is slow to accelerate and is running rough, what could the problem be?
I have a 96 VW Jetta. Lately it’s been running rough when I accelerate from a stop. It will sometimes accelerate slower than normal, and jerk a bit as I get up to speed. At other times it’s fine/normal. I can’t predict when it will do this. I worried it’s a symptom that will lead to a bigger problem. Any ideas on what this could be and how I could fix it?

A: It could possibly be the fuel pump. That would be one of the worst cases though

I would
a) replace spark plugs (way cheap)
b) run some lucas upper cylinder lubricant/fuel injector cleaner through your gas tank ( a lot of it. don’t get the cheaper brands of fuel injector cleaner ONLY lucas trust me)
c) check all your spark plug wires and connections
d) oil change
e) air filter change

if none of that works, check distributor and rotor and after that it would probably be the fuel pump. Buy one yourself, and then take it to an honest mechanic Easy install dont let them rob you.

Q: How can I make my classic aircooled vw beetle more fuel efficient and economic?
My Bug struggles to get 35mpg which I know is good for it’s age but my parents 2000 VW passat gets about 47mpg! Unfair!

A: scrap your bettle, and get a passat! easy :-)

Q: What is the diffrence between a 2000 vw Gti and a vw gti Wolfsburg edition?
I was just wondering what the diffrence is between a 2000 VW GTI 2.8 2 door manual wolfsburg edition and the regular 2000 VW GTI ….

A: wolfsburg is where they make them in germany and those are still assmbled in mexico not in germany

Q: Is worth it specialising in VW Service Diagnostics and repairs?
I am a well trained VW service tech for all the models, specialising in Diagnostics and repairs than the normal oil change, basic service stuff.
I am trying to invest in such areas,do you think it’s business worth persuing?
Which of these states Florida, Illinois and MD do you think has high VW population counts to justify returns on such investments?

Answering community, I will appreciate your help and inputs.

Thanks.

A: Specializing in the age of OBD II can leave you hungry at times. Genre specialization like European or Japanese/Asian is a better way to go. That way you won’t have the rough times. Surely a BMW/Audi/Merc/VW will be visiting at all times. The equipment isn’t that much extra. I like the weather in FL, and hate it in IL. MD is OK

Q: What tools do I need to remove an 08 VW Jetta factory radio and where can I get them if it is a specialty?
I am trying to remove my Factory Radio in my 2008 VW Jetta. It is a single disc player. Also, if possible can I keep the Aux port in the armrest operational.

A: I would say go to a stereo shop, and see if they will help you out. You can also try going to ebay and doing a search for the kit. If its just a plain Aux jack that connects to the back of the stock stereo, you should not have a problem keeping the Aux port. I have an 04, but I had a pro audio dealer take care of putting a complete system in.

I use and LOVE, www.vwvortex.com If you haven’t used the site, its a VW/Audi bible. There should be step by step instructions for any vdub need.

Q: What is the best way to soundproof a classic vw beetle?
I have a 1971 vw beetle. It has been restored by the last owner and there seems to be little soundproofing in the engine bay and there is not much on the inside. Can anyone recommend sites/give advice?

A: Hit up your local body shop supply joint for “Q-Pads”. They’re expensive, but they work great. Another cheaper suggestion is rubberized undercoating.
In my last Bug, I hosed down the firewall with undercoat, put on a layer of pads, then covered them with aluminum heat matting for a nice finished look. I also put pads on the inside, under the rug lining the storage bay behind the rear seat. Get under the seat as well. Undercoat inside the doors and rear side panels behind the interior panels. Hose down under the car too. Not just the floorboards, but under the trunk, fuel tank & all 4 fenders. Upgrade the carpets with some sort of thin pad (woven or foam) beneath. A new muffler couldn’t hurt. Make sure your tailpipes are correctly adjusted (No, I’m not kidding. Adjusting them to the correct length reduces noise & sets the correct amount of back pressure).
Spray glue foam pad to the roof panel between it & the headliner. Shoot spray foam (Great Stuff) into the hollow rocker panels & roof ribs. If you do all this, you’ll add probably 30 pounds to the car, but it’ll be a lot quieter.
Remember: these cars (for all the amazing engineering that went into them) are basically just tin cans. They were designed & built to be inexpensive, not quiet & luxurious. Lots of hollow spaces. The slightest chirp or rattle gets amplified inside them.

Q: Why does my VW Passat make a clicking noise when starting up the engine?
I have a VW Passat 98. When the engine is cold and I start it up, it makes a clacking noise for approximatly 2 to 3 minutes. If I fire it up and pull away to drive, when I change gears the cliacking noise gets louder with every rev. After the engine has become warm the noise disappears. Can anyone help me reguarding this problem? Thanks.

A: THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS WARMING UP.

Q: What year is the VW bug in the Volkswagen comercials?
I have been seeing the Black VW bug in the Volkswagen commercials and was wondering what year it was. Does anyone know?

A: the little black one is a 66 model, that was the last year they used the tubular bumpers on those, cool car isn’t it,i used to have a white one like that one on the commercial, not very fast but extremely cheap to operate, good luck.,,PS actually it could be from a 64 -to a 66,you cant tell the difference in the front ends on those models.

Q: How do you differentiate a german mad vw bug from a mexican made vw beetle?
I want to buy a vw beetle but I wanted a german made one. pls help me to identify it.

A: Most early VWs you find will be German made. Mexican beetles maintained the 58-64 body style up to 1970, so that should be a dead giveaway. Although bugs were made in Mexico up to recent years, you won’t find any in the US after 1979 (i believe), and they cannot be registered because of safety regulations.

Q: What is the difference between a 1956 Vw Kombi and a 1957 Vw Kombi?
Kombi is a type of Vw Bus. 1956 had little tail lights pressed bumper etc. Same as the 1957.

A: Why are you asking us that?

No shit the kombi is a type of bus. Most people on the VW Y!A know that.

The 1957 bus was made one year after the 1956 bus was made.

Happy??
