Q: What things to look for when buying used jeep wrangler?
What to check/look for when buying a used 5 speed 4.0L (tj) 1997-1999 jeep wrangler?

Like known engine/mechanical/cosmetic/etc. problems?
also are hardtops only used for security and are jeeps really broken into often with the soft top?

A: Nothing unusual or different about buying a used wrangler. Crawl under and look for signs that it has been used hard offroad – scraping or scarring on skid plates, control arms, axles, etc. Be sure to use all modes and ranges on the transfer case – take it to a dirt lot or sandlot and engage 2 HI (normal driving), 4 HI (never on pavement, sort surfaces like sand, snow, ice only) Neutral (Yes, make sure that works correctly too), and 4 LO (again, never on pavement, soft and rough surfaces only). Other than that make sure all gears work correctly, listen for any sounds from the engine, transmission, and axles while driving. Check all 6 universal joints – nobody ever checks them, they should be replaced every 3 years or so. Check the engine, transmission, transfer case, axles, brake system and hydraulic clutch for leaks. Make sure the clutch engages and releases smoothly and normally. Look down the body to make sure it’s fairly straight. Make sure all 4 tires are, if not the same, at least very close in size and tread type.

Hard tops are quieter and more weather proof, as well as more secure, but nothing is really secure and Jeeps with hardtops can be broken into as easily as any other vehicle. NEVER leave anything in it. Period, end of story, then you’ll never loose anything.

Q: Do you know of a good used Jeep Wrangler in Florida?
I am looking for a decent used Jeep Wrangler. I want a 6 cylinder but would consider others. I am in the Orlando area but will travel for the right Jeep. I would like it to have a top so I can drive in the rain. I am looking to spend $2000 but will spend more if the Jeep is worth it. Thanks.

How much does a 2001 or 2002 Used Jeep Wrangler SE cost?

A: you can find one with just under 100K miles for around $10-12,000ish. depending on how high of quality you want it. if it’s going to be a toy, you can find a modded one for about $10K and talk em down to about $9K. On the other hand, your looking at about $12K for a good quality, no hassle daily driver.

Q: Anything specific I should be sure to check when purchasing a used Jeep Wrangler?
I’m looking into purchasing my first Jeep, a 95 Wrangler. The one i’m looking at has 89k, which seems to be just breaking in from what people tell me. Is there anything specific to this model that I should look for during the test drive/inspection? Are these vehicles prone to any certain problems?

A: Check for the following:
-First and most important find out why such an old Jeep has such low mileage.
-Engine for leaks
-Oil Leakage
-Check for past accidents
-Check for past repairs

Q: Where can i get used jeep Wrangler Airbags?
i need Airbags for jeep Wrangler anyone know where to get some i cant find the anyware?

A: Air bags come in two styles, blown or not blown. After the bag is detonated there isn’t any way to repack it properly or to reset the charge, unless you work in the air bag company. A new air bag is usually only available at dealerships and usually for over $1000. Repacking is illegal and imoral but sadly common.

Dodge man is right. Serious offroaders don’t like the idea of bumping a stump and getting a concussion so the airbag gets dumped or disabled.

If you go the private sale route look for white dust marks. Airbags are packed with a talcum powder type substance to keep them dry and pliable. If there is powder marks around it steering wheel you might be looking at a repack job. Avoid it.

Q: How do I go about buying a used Jeep Wrangler?
I’m a 22 year old guy from Michigan and I have wanted a Jeep ever since I first began driving. I’ve saved up around 5,000 to spend on one. I’m looking for a jeep thats a 94 to a 98 with under 120,000 miles and in decent condition with either a 2.8 4-cylinder or the 4.0 6-cyclinder. I have searched for about a week and I have yet to find a good buy. I’m not looking to mod it into an off-road vehicle maybe a small lift and some larger tires but thats about it. My question is what should I look for when buying one and how do I tell what its really worth (aside from blue book value, there’s always debate on what the condition of the car really is in). Can someone give me any pointers?

A: First off, if you are having no luck in finding a Wrangler around your area, you can try searching http://www.autotrader.com . They have a listing of Jeeps for sale around your area as well as up to 300 miles away, if you are willing to travel. It would be a good idea if you have a friend who is a mechanic to go with you and check the Jeep out for mechanical problems. Although most Jeeps are pretty reliable, there are a few people who dog them to death when they have them. You should look for rust, oil/fluid leaks under the Jeep, look for any dents under the undercarriage (this indicates that it has been off road and may have some damage underneath), look for oil on the motor, etc. Always test drive a vehicle before buying. If it doesn’t crank or run good, don’t get it. There’s probably more trouble there than you are wanting to repair. Also, if the dealer says that you cannot test drive it, don’t bother with it, just walk away. Use your common sense, if it doesn’t look or run good, it probably isn’t worth your time.

As for the value of the Jeep, get as much information as possible about the Jeep before you buy it and do a little research, such as on http://www.kbb.com to find out how much it should be worth.

I wouldn’t buy from an auction. The thing with auctions is you don’t know what you are going to get until you have already purchased it.

Hope this helps.

Q: what questions should you ask when buying an used jeep wrangler from a private owner?
i know what to ask about another kind of car but i know jeep are a diff. league of 4×4…
ok i have a appiontment this weekend to look at it and drive it..what is something to look for that a very inexperience person can spot?? how would you test it? examples?

A: Check the drive-train, transfer-case, u-joints. If the vehicle was well cared for it should not leak or burn oil. Older 4L’s tended to sweat oil around the valve covers a bit. But you don’t want any major drips from the rear main bearings. A good piece of advice I once heard was to let the owner drive while you are a passenger. If they beat the hell out of the car, you may not want to buy it.

They commonly rust a bit around the kick panels and window frames so look there for problems depending on the age. I had to put a new window frame in my YJ myself since the old one rotted out.

Check the extra tops for the Jeep if you get some with it, soft tops will wear out over time and start to tear.

Hope this helps

Q: Whats a good amount of mileage for a used jeep wrangler that’s older than 2001?
I’m wanting my dad to buy me a jeep wrangler for my first car. I’m searching for a good one, but everyone i find that i like, my dad said that the mileage is to much. So whats a good amount of mileage and a reasonable price for that?
If you find an example of one that’s good, it would be highly appreciated.

Thanks (:

A: 10K to 12K a year is best for any car. I know, who does that, right? That’s what dealers and insurance adjusters go by. What a rip, but that’s life

Q: I am looking for a good YJ jeep wrangler to get. What year and size engine is best? what to look for in used?
I onced owned a 90 6-cylinder & had to sell it for my car to save on gas. Now I’m not driving as much I want to get a jeep again. I prefer the YJ 1992-1995. I don’t want a carburetor because they don’t seem effecient. Any advice for what to get or what to look for in a used wrangler? Is the 2.5L 4 cylinder too weak of an engine?I dont plan on wheelin it but I want to be able to take a good trail or I wouldn’t get a jeep.I want to buy one in stock condition because I know why people get their jeep’s built to take off road… they take them off road. What I mean is I trust the history of a stock vehicle better. Are there problem area’s I should look for or avoid in buying a used 92-95 wrangler? My old jeep was a soft top and I was wondering if hard tops leak after the seal is broken once you take it off? I dont want people thinking I am not a jeep guy,I know what I am getting into and thats why I am going back,I just was wondering what anyone had for advice or what to look for. Thanks!

A: I had a 95 and was very pleased other than the performance of the 4 cylinder. It got great gas mileage and had more than enough pep around town, but it suffered on the interstate and in hilly ground trying to keep your speed up. A 4 cylinder is fine off road due to most trails are low speed and you can use the gears for power, plus more power can mean more breakage. If you can find one though the 6-cyl. is the best bet. Mine also had a hard top which is GREAT but be sure to have a soft top for the summer months because the hard top is a pain to take off all the time. My top did leak after it was removed the first time and the problem was the seal above the vent windows that didn’t seal up good against the top. One other problem to be aware of is they have weak 5-speed transmissions. I lost 5th gear two times in it and a friend of mine now has 5th gear out on her 95 model also. Don’t get me wrong, I had it for 10 years and had great luck out of it overall. Other than the transmission I only did oil changes on it and regular maintenance. Good luck!
